"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." - John 10:27, NLT
How do we know God’s voice? This is a question we all ask in our walk with God. Sometimes we search high and low for the answer, but we have the answer within reach. We know God’s voice through reading His Word, the Bible.
The only way to know God’s voice and build intimacy in relationship is through His Word. By making it a daily habit to read the Bible, we learn to understand His voice to us. It’s a knowing in our spirit when God speaks to us, and this is built through intimacy. Intimacy is built through relationship, and relationship is built through time spent. We spend time with God when we read the Bible, His Word to us. Reading God’s Word teaches us to recognize and listen to the still, small voice of God. We must seek to understand, and seeking to understand comes from listening.
"Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry." - James 1:19
This verse is talked about often, but practically it gets glossed over. In an age of information, everyone has a voice and everyone wants to be heard. We barely take the time to read an article in its entirety, but have an opinion we want heard in the comments.
What would happen if we didn’t add our voice to the end of every article we read, but rather took the information and took the time to process the information? What if we read something in its entirety, understanding the full context behind it all, and fully understand the meaning? We would be practicing the art of being quick to listen and slow to speak. We would be less angry in society. We would be more understanding. There would be less frivolous conversation, and we would better recognize the voice of the Lord because our minds are quieter. We would get back to John 10:27.
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
I’m wondering if we can make this year, 2021, a year of pulling away from the extra and getting back to what God is really saying. May you be blessed as you receive revelation straight from the Word of God.
